A BILL
To amend section 3727.06 of the Revised Code to allow 1
podiatrists to make independent hospital 2
admissions.3


BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

       Section 1. That section 3727.06 of the Revised Code be 4
amended to read as follows:5

       Sec. 3727.06. (A) As used in this section:6

        (1) "Doctor" means either a doctor of medicine and surgery or 7
a doctor of osteopathic medicine and surgery.8

        (2) "Podiatrist" means a doctor of podiatric medicine and 9
surgery.10

        (B) Only a doctor of medicine who is a member of the medical 11
staff, doctor of osteopathic medicine who is a member of the 12
medical staff, or dentist who is a member of the medical staff, or 13
podiatrist who is a member of the medical staff may admit a 14
patient to a hospital, but a podiatrist who is a member of the 15
staff of a hospital may co-admit a patient with a doctor of 16
medicine who is a member of the medical staff or doctor of 17
osteopathic medicine who is a member of the medical staff.18

       (C) All hospital patients shall be under the medical19
supervision of a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathic20
medicine, except that services that may be rendered by a licensed21
dentist pursuant to Chapter 4715. of the Revised Code provided to22
patients admitted solely for the purpose of receiving such23
services shall be under the supervision of the admitting dentist24
and that services that may be rendered by a podiatrist pursuant to 25
section 4731.51 of the Revised Code provided to patients admitted 26
solely for the purpose of receiving such services shall be under 27
the supervision of the admitting podiatrist. If treatment not 28
within the scope of Chapter 4715. or section 4731.51 of the 29
Revised Code is required at the time of admission by a dentist or 30
podiatrist, or becomes necessary during the course of hospital 31
treatment by a dentist or podiatrist, such treatment shall be 32
under the supervision of a doctor of medicine who is a member of 33
the medical staff or a doctor of osteopathic medicine who is a 34
member of the medical staff. It shall be the responsibility of the 35
admitting dentist or podiatrist to make arrangements with a doctor36
of medicine who is a member of the medical staff or a doctor of 37
osteopathic medicine who is a member of the medical staff to be 38
responsible for the patient's treatment outside the scope of 39
Chapter 4715. or section 4731.51 of the Revised Code when 40
necessary during the patient's stay in the hospital.41

       Section 2. That existing section 3727.06 of the Revised Code 42
is hereby repealed.43
