Sec. 5.2266. (A) Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a | 5 |
neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain | 6 |
and spinal cord causing progressive muscle weakness and paralysis, | 7 |
and eventually death, while the patient's mental capacity and | 8 |
awareness of the disease remain unaffected. Because there is no | 9 |
known cause, prevention, or cure for this devastating disease, the | 10 |
general assembly finds that it is vitally important that the month | 11 |
of May be designated as "ALS Awareness Month." | 12 |
