A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To urge the Congress of the United States to take 1
appropriate measures to denounce the actions of 2
the Russian Federation in banning meat imports 3
from Ohio and other areas of the United States.4


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):


       WHEREAS, The Russian Federation recently banned pork and 5
other meat product imports from certain areas of the world, 6
including Ohio, citing the threat of the spread of swine influenza 7
as the reason for the ban; and8

       WHEREAS, The World Health Organization has confirmed that 9
swine influenza does not spread through the consumption of 10
infected pork or other meat products; and11

       WHEREAS, The Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, 12
Robert Boggs, has reiterated that pork is safe to eat and that 13
swine influenza is not transmitted through meat consumption; and 14

       WHEREAS, Under international law, countries are only 15
permitted to block imports of meat and other products if there are 16
legitimate health and safety concerns based on proper scientific 17
evidence; now therefore be it18

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 128th General Assembly 19
of the State of Ohio, in adopting this resolution, urge the 20
Congress of the United States to take appropriate measures to 21
denounce the actions of the Russian Federation in banning meat 22
imports from Ohio and other areas of the United States; and be it 23
further 24

       RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives 25
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the 26
Speaker and Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, 27
the President Pro Tempore and Secretary of the United States 28
Senate, the members of the Ohio Congressional delegation, and the 29
news media of Ohio.30
