A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Designating Summer Learning Day in Ohio for 2009 and 2010

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):

WHEREAS, The members of the Ohio House of Representatives are pleased to declare the second Thursday in July of 2009 and 2010 as Summer Learning Day in Ohio; and

WHEREAS, Summer vacation results in the loss of knowledge for most children. It is reported that low-income children who do not have access to high-quality learning opportunities during the summer lose a vast amount of their knowledge and skills, especially in reading. In addition, a great deal of students gain weight during their break from school because they do not have access to healthy and nutritious foods; and

WHEREAS, Education is vital to our nation's continued economic and social well-being,which is why quality summer leaning programs are a must in every community. Research shows that students score lower on tests at the end of the summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer, therefore it is imperative that we find a way to offer education opportunities to all students during the summer months.

WHEREAS, Summer Learning Day in Ohio calls atention to the need for high-quality learning programs and activitites during the summer. In an effort to increase the number of such programs, we urge local schools, universities, and civic organizations to host events in support of this important observance; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Ohio House of Representatives, in adopting this Resolution, declare the second Thursday in July of 2009 and 2010 as Summer Learning Day in Ohio; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to the news media of Ohio.
