A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To memorialize the Congress of the United States to 1
retain the image of President Ulysses S. Grant on 2
the fifty dollar bill and reject the proposal to 3
redesign the fifty dollar bill.4

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):

WHEREAS, Representative Patrick McHenry, a Republican 5
congressman from North Carolina, has rallied thirteen members of 6
the Congress of the United States to support a bill proposing the 7
replacement of Ulysses S. Grant on the fifty dollar bill with 8
Ronald Reagan; and 9

WHEREAS, This bill, H.R. 4705 of the 111th Congress, is 10
pending in the House Financial Services Committee; and11

WHEREAS, Ohio, and in particular Clermont and Brown counties, 12
hold a special place in the history of our nation by having the 13
distinct honor of being the birth place and childhood home of 14
Ulysses S. Grant; and15

WHEREAS, The people of Ohio take great pride in the fact that 16
the eighteenth President of the United States graces the fifty 17
dollar bill and represents the strength and spirit of the American 18
people; and19

WHEREAS, The decision to place Ulysses S. Grant on the fifty 20
dollar bill was not a hasty or trivial decision, as Grant first 21
appeared on the currency in 1914, nearly thirty years after his 22
death and with a half-century of perspective on his Civil War 23
achievements; and24

WHEREAS, The people of Ohio have not forgotten the legendary 25
general who led the North to victory, became our nation's 26
eighteenth president, and was a champion of civil rights; and27

WHEREAS, Without diminishing the accomplishments of President 28
Ronald Reagan, the people of Ohio, in particular the residents of 29
Clermont and Brown counties, firmly oppose any legislation that 30
would replace President Grant on the fifty dollar bill and ask 31
that others recognize Ulysses S. Grant as a beacon of the 32
nineteenth century and as such, deserves to keep his position of 33
prominence on America's currency; and34

WHEREAS, That the governments of Clermont and Brown counties 35
have formally expressed their opposition to any legislation which 36
would change the face of the fifty dollar bill; now therefore be 37
it 38

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 128th General Assembly 39
of the State of Ohio, call upon the Congress to reject H.R. 4705 40
and all efforts to replace President Grant on the fifty dollar 41
bill; and be it further42

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives 43
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the 44
Speaker and Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, 45
the President Pro Tempore and Secretary of the United States 46
Senate, the members of the Ohio congressional delegation, and the 47
news media of Ohio.48
