A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To designate the month of March 2009 as "Deep-Vein 1
Thrombosis Awareness Month."2


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING):


       WHEREAS, The members of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio 3
are pleased to designate the month of March 2009 as "Deep-Vein 4
Thrombosis Awareness Month" in Ohio in memory of journalist David 5
Bloom; and6

       WHEREAS, Deep-vein thrombosis is a condition that occurs when 7
a blood clot forms in one of the large veins, which may result in 8
a fatal pulmonary embolism; and9

       WHEREAS, Deep-vein thrombosis is a serious but preventable 10
medical condition; and11

       WHEREAS, Deep-vein thrombosis affects approximately two 12
million Americans each year; and13

       WHEREAS, Fatal pulmonary embolism causes more deaths each 14
year than breast cancer and AIDS combined; and15

       WHEREAS, Complications from deep-vein thrombosis take up to 16
two hundred thousand American lives each year; and17

       WHEREAS, Fatal pulmonary embolism may be the most common 18
preventable cause of hospital death in the United States; and19

       WHEREAS, Risk factors for deep-vein thrombosis include cancer 20
and certain heart or respiratory diseases; and21

       WHEREAS, Pulmonary embolism is the leading cause of maternal 22
death associated with childbirth; and23

       WHEREAS, According to a survey conducted by the American 24
Public Health Association, seventy-four per cent of Americans are 25
unaware of deep-vein thrombosis; and26

       WHEREAS, National Broadcasting Company correspondent David 27
Bloom died of a fatal pulmonary embolism while covering the war in 28
Iraq; and29

       WHEREAS, Melanie Bloom, widow of David Bloom, and more than 30
fifty members of the Coalition to Prevent Deep-Vein Thrombosis are 31
working to raise awareness of this silent killer; and32

       WHEREAS, The designation of March 2009 as "Deep-Vein 33
Thrombosis Awareness Month" in memory of David Bloom will raise 34
public awareness about this life-threatening but preventable 35
condition; now therefore be it36

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 128th General Assembly 37
of Ohio, in adopting this resolution, designate March 2009 as 38
"Deep-Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month" in Ohio to honor the memory 39
of David Bloom; and be it further40

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 128th General Assembly 41
of Ohio, in adopting this resolution, recognize the importance of 42
raising awareness of deep-vein thrombosis; and be it further43

       RESOLVED, That the clerk of the Senate transmit a duly 44
authenticated copy of this resolution to the Coalition to Prevent 45
Deep-Vein Thrombosis.46
