A RESOLUTION
To memorialize the Commissioner of Major League 1
Baseball, Allen "Bud" Selig, to select the 2
Cincinnati Reds as the host team of the 2013 Major 3
League Baseball All-Star Game.4


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

       WHEREAS, The Major League Baseball All-Star Game, also 5
popularly known as the "Midsummer Classic," is an annual baseball 6
game between players from the National Baseball League and the 7
American Baseball League. The players who participate in the 8
All-Star Game are selected by a combination of fans, players, 9
coaches, and managers and are recognized as the most talented 10
players in Major League Baseball; and11

       WHEREAS, The All-Star Game is played in early to mid-July and 12
marks the symbolic halfway point in Major League Baseball. Each 13
year the game is hosted by a Major League Baseball team in its 14
home stadium, with the venue generally alternating between a 15
National League host team and an American League host team; and16

       WHEREAS, The Cincinnati Reds of the National League last 17
hosted an All-Star Game in 1988. However, that All-Star game was 18
hosted in the Reds' former stadium, Riverfront Stadium. Since that 19
time, the Reds have constructed a new state-of-the-art baseball 20
stadium, Great-American Ball Park; and 21

       WHEREAS, The Cincinnati Reds are recognized as the first 22
professional baseball team. Founded in 1866 as the Cincinnati Red 23
Stockings, the Cincinnati ball club became a professional team in 24
1869. Over the course of the history of the Cincinnati Reds 25
franchise, the Reds have won five World Series Championships and 26
nine National League Pennants and have over thirty-five players, 27
managers, and play-by-play broadcasters enshrined in the National 28
Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York; and29

       WHEREAS, Fans of the Cincinnati Reds hail not only from the 30
City of Cincinnati but also from communities throughout Ohio, 31
Indiana, Kentucky, and elsewhere in the United States. Cincinnati 32
Reds fans are widely known as some of the most devoted fans in 33
baseball, and the City of Cincinnati is recognized as one of the 34
premier baseball cities in North America; now therefore be it35

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 128th 36
General Assembly of the State of Ohio, in adopting this 37
resolution, memorialize the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, 38
Allen "Bud" Selig, to select the Cincinnati Reds as the host team 39
of the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game; and be it further40

       RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly 41
authenticated copies of this resolution to the Commissioner of 42
Major League Baseball, appropriate officials from the Cincinnati 43
Reds, and the news media of Ohio.44
