A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To honor and commemorate veterans of the Vietnam War 1
on the fifty-fifth anniversary of the first 2
casualty of the war.3


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):


       WHEREAS, United States Armed Forces served in Vietnam for a 4
period of twenty years; and5

       WHEREAS, Over 8,744,000 served in the United States Armed 6
Forces during the Vietnam War era; and7

       WHEREAS, Over 58,000 United States service members, and over 8
3,000 Ohioans, perished in the Vietnam War; and9

       WHEREAS, Over 300,000 United States service members were 10
wounded in the Vietnam War; and11

       WHEREAS, Approximately 600 United States service members were 12
held as prisoners of war during the conflict; and13

       WHEREAS, Efforts to recover those missing in action continue; 14
and15

       WHEREAS, The Congress of the United States, in the Defense 16
Authorization Act of 2008, established a program to coordinate, 17
support, and facilitate other programs and activities of the 18
federal government, state, and local governments, and other 19
persons and organizations in commemoration of the Vietnam War; and20

       WHEREAS, Veterans of the Vietnam War deserve continued 21
recognition for their service and sacrifice; and22

       WHEREAS, the first Vietnam War casualty recognized on the 23
Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., occurred in 24
1956; now therefore be it25

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 129th General Assembly 26
of the State of Ohio, mindful of the fifty-fifth anniversary of 27
the first casualty in the Vietnam War, honor and commemorate all 28
who served this country during the Vietnam War era, and be it 29
further30

       RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives 31
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the 32
President of the United States, the Secretary of the United States 33
Department of Defense, the members of the Ohio Congressional 34
delegation, the Governor of Ohio, and the news media of Ohio.35
