To support the rights of Macedonians living in the | 1 |
Balkans to speak their language, to practice their | 2 |
customs, and to be granted all of the civil and | 3 |
human rights required by international law. | 4 |
WHEREAS, In 1991, over 95 per cent of the voters of Macedonia | 5 |
voted for independence from Yugoslavia in a national referendum | 6 |
that was subsequently confirmed with a declaration for | 7 |
independence adopted by the first multi-party Macedonian | 8 |
Parliament; and | 9 |
WHEREAS, In 1993, the Republic of Macedonia became a member | 10 |
of the United Nations; and | 11 |
WHEREAS, In 1994, the United States recognized the Republic | 12 |
of Macedonia as a sovereign state; and | 13 |
WHEREAS, In 2004, the United States became the first country | 14 |
to recognize the Republic of Macedonia with its official and | 15 |
constitutional name; and | 16 |
WHEREAS, The Republic of Macedonia has been cited and honored | 17 |
by President George W. Bush and the United States Department of | 18 |
Defense for its support of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; and | 19 |
WHEREAS, There is a large contingency of Macedonians living | 20 |
within Ohio; now therefore be it | 21 |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 129th General Assembly | 22 |
of the State of Ohio, support the rights of Macedonians living | 23 |
throughout the Balkans to speak their language, to attend schools | 24 |
and churches with classes and services offered in their language, | 25 |
to practice their customs, to be able to call themselves | 26 |
Macedonians, and to be granted all of the civil and human rights | 27 |
required by international law; and be it further | 28 |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives | 29 |
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the | 30 |
President and Vice President of the United States, the Speaker and | 31 |
Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, the President | 32 |
Pro Tempore and Secretary of the United States Senate, the members | 33 |
of the Ohio Congressional delegation, the Governor of the State of | 34 |
Ohio, and the news media of Ohio. | 35 |
