A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

To designate March 2012 as Professional Social Work 1
Month. 2

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):

       WHEREAS, The profession of social work has been instrumental 3
in achieving advances in civil and human rights in the United 4
States and across the globe for more than a century; and 5

       WHEREAS, The primary mission of social work is to enhance 6
human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, 7
especially the most vulnerable; and 8

       WHEREAS, Programs and services provided by professional 9
social workers are essential elements of the American social 10
safety net; and 11

       WHEREAS, Social workers have a positive influence on 12
adolescent and youth development, aging and family care giving, 13
child protection and family services, health care navigation, 14
mental and behavioral health treatment, military and veterans 15
assistance, nonprofit management and community development, and 16
poverty reduction; and 17

       WHEREAS, Social workers serve as specialists, consultants, 18
private practitioners, educators, community leaders, policymakers, 19
and researchers; and 20

       WHEREAS, Social workers influence many human service and 21
other organizations and are employed in workplaces ranging from 22
private and public agencies, hospices, hospitals, schools, clinics 23
to businesses and corporations, military units, elected offices, 24
think tanks, and foundations; and 25

       WHEREAS, Social workers seek to improve the social 26
functioning and conditions of people in emotional, psychological, 27
economic, or physical need; and 28

       WHEREAS, Social workers are experts in care coordination, 29
case management, and therapeutic treatment for biopsychosocial 30
issues and have roles in more than fifty different fields of 31
practice; and 32

       WHEREAS, Social workers believe that a nation's strength 33
depends on the ability of the majority of its citizens to lead 34
productive and healthy lives; and 35

       WHEREAS, Social workers help people find hope and new options 36
for achieving their maximum potential, often when those people are 37
navigating major life challenges; and 38

       WHEREAS, Social workers identify and address gaps in social 39
systems that impede full participation by individuals or groups in 40
society; now therefore be it 41

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 129th General Assembly, 42
in recognition that our nation would be less successful without 43
the contributions of America's 640,000 social workers, designate 44
the month of March 2012 as Professional Social Work Month and 45
encourage all citizens of the state to join with the General 46
Assembly, as well as the National Association of Social Workers - 47
Ohio Chapter, in support of the profession of social work; and be 48
it further 49

       RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives 50
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the news 51
media of Ohio. 52
