To honor and commemorate veterans of the Vietnam War | 1 |
who served during the Mayaguez incident and the | 2 |
subsequent battle on Koh Tang Island that | 3 |
commenced on May 12, 1975. | 4 |
WHEREAS, United States Armed Forces served in Vietnam for a | 5 |
period of twenty years; and | 6 |
WHEREAS, Over 8,744,000 members served in the United States | 7 |
Armed Forces during the Vietnam War era; and | 8 |
WHEREAS, Over 58,000 United States service members, and over | 9 |
3,000 Ohio service members, perished in the Vietnam War; and | 10 |
WHEREAS, Over 300,000 United States service members were | 11 |
wounded in the Vietnam War; and | 12 |
WHEREAS, Efforts to recover those missing in action continue; | 13 |
and | 14 |
WHEREAS, Although the last American combat soldiers left | 15 |
South Vietnam in March 1973, military advisors and Marines | 16 |
remained to protect U.S. installations; and | 17 |
WHEREAS, On May 12, 1975, less than two weeks after the Fall | 18 |
of Saigon, the Khmer Rouge seized the Mayaguez, an American | 19 |
container ship; and | 20 |
WHEREAS, United States Armed Forces commenced a rescue | 21 |
mission; and | 22 |
WHEREAS, The mission to liberate the Mayaguez, and the | 23 |
subsequent battle on Koh Tang Island, is considered the last | 24 |
combat mission in the Vietnam War; now therefore be it | 25 |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 129th General Assembly | 26 |
of the State of Ohio, honor and commemorate veterans of the | 27 |
Vietnam War who served during the Mayaguez incident and the | 28 |
subsequent battle on Koh Tang Island; and be it further | 29 |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives | 30 |
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the | 31 |
President of the United States, the Secretary of the United States | 32 |
Department of Defense, the members of the Ohio Congressional | 33 |
delegation, the Governor of Ohio, and the news media of Ohio. | 34 |
