WHEREAS, Osama bin Laden founded the global militant Islamic | 4 |
group al Qaeda and has proclaimed that Islamic militants do not | 5 |
differentiate between military or civilian targets; and | 6 |
WHEREAS, On September 11, 2001, the terrorist group al Qaeda | 7 |
coordinated attacks on the United States; and | 8 |
WHEREAS, Nearly 3,000 victims died during the attacks and | 9 |
more than 6,000 victims were injured; and | 10 |
WHEREAS, Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden publicly claimed | 11 |
responsibility for the attacks; and | 12 |
WHEREAS, President Barack Obama, has employed a strategy, and | 13 |
dedicated considerable United States resources and military | 14 |
personnel, for the purpose of pursuing al Qaeda "on both sides of | 15 |
the border" between Afghanistan and Pakistan; and | 16 |
WHEREAS, On May 1, 2011, the United States Armed Forces, | 17 |
carrying out orders from President Barack Obama, attacked Osama | 18 |
bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, killing him along | 19 |
with his son and several other al Qaeda operatives; and | 20 |
WHEREAS, The death of Osama bin Laden represents the | 21 |
culmination of nearly ten years of efforts by the United States | 22 |
Armed Forces to bring Osama bin Laden to justice for the death and | 23 |
destruction that he and his organization wrought in New York, | 24 |
Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, and throughout the world; now | 25 |
therefore be it | 26 |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 129th | 27 |
General Assembly of the State of Ohio, honor President Barack | 28 |
Obama and the United States Armed Forces for their successful | 29 |
mission against Osama bin Laden on Sunday, May 1, 2011; and be it | 30 |
further | 31 |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly | 32 |
authenticated copies of this resolution to the President of the | 33 |
United States, the Secretary of the Department of Defense, and the | 34 |
news media of Ohio. | 35 |
