129th General Assembly
Regular Session
2011-2012
S. R. No. 107

Senator Patton

A RESOLUTION
Honoring the City of Westlake on its Bicentennial.

WHEREAS,  The members of the Senate of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to congratulate the City of Westlake on the Two Hundredth Anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS,  This special occasion provides a fitting time to honor the City of Westlake, for over the past two hundred years, its residents have been actively involved in, and concerned about, the events in their community. In 1811, a small group of families settled on the land in Dover Township, which would later become known as Westlake, and they included James Hall, Barnabas and Hannah Hall, Abner and Rebecca Smith, and Noah Crocker and his wife and children; and

WHEREAS,  In the late 1800s, Dover was the second largest shipping point for grapes in the United States, but its viniculture industry died out in the 1950s. Over the years, the area flourished, and such industries as the Dover Blast Furnace were built between 1830 and 1835, a county fair was established in 1847, several churches were started, including Methodist Episcopal in 1825, St. Paul Lutheran in 1858, St. Bernadette Catholic in 1950, and St. Ladislas Catholic in 1973, and the first school building was constructed between 1816 and 1825. In 1940, Dover Township became the Village of Westlake, and seventeen years later, it became the City of Westlake; and

WHEREAS,  Since its inception in 1811, the City of Westlake has enjoyed the benefits of a generous and civic-minded population, and those who currently make it their home take great pride in their community and its rich heritage. Their efforts have certainly made the area a pleasant and friendly place in which to live and work, and the city has become known for its residents' cooperation and integrity; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the Senate of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, commend the City of Westlake on its Bicentennial and salute all those taking part in this joyous celebration; and be it further

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to the City of Westlake.
