Honoring the Ohio National Road Association on its observance of the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the Historic National Road. |
WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to commend the Ohio National Road Association on the Bicentennial of the beginning of the construction of the Historic National Road; and |
WHEREAS, The Ohio National Road Association is deserving of high praise, for it has made a positive and lasting contribution to the area by collaborating with the Columbus Compact Corporation and the City of Columbus to take part in a six-state celebration of the National Road Bicentennial. America's first federally-funded interstate highway, the National Road was conceived by President George Washington as an all-weather road that would bridge the Allegheny Mountains, and it was signed into law in 1806 by President Thomas Jefferson; and |
WHEREAS, Construction began on the Historic National Road in 1811 in Cumberland, Maryland, and it entered Ohio in 1825, reaching Columbus in 1833. Today it is designated as a National Scenic Byway and an All-American Road by the Federal Highway Administration, for it has features that do not exist anywhere else in the country and has been instrumental in shaping American history and culture; and |
WHEREAS, The Bicentennial of the Historic National Road is a noteworthy event that demonstrates the remarkable civic concern and public spirit of local citizens. It is through the unceasing efforts of individuals such as those associated with the Ohio National Road Association and the Columbus Compact Corporation that Ohio has gained a reputation as a friendly and pleasant place in which to live; therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, applaud the Ohio National Road Association on the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the construction of the Historic National Road and extend best wishes to all those involved with this noteworthy observance; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to the Ohio National Road Association and the news media of Ohio. |
