Recognizing the Fortieth Anniversary of Operation Homecoming. |
WHEREAS, The members of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to recognize the Fortieth Anniversary of Operation Homecoming; and |
WHEREAS, During the Vietnam War, American prisoners of war were afflicted by poor living conditions, torture and abuse, a lack of food and medical treatment, and attempts at indoctrination. When the Paris Peace Accords were signed in 1973, provisions were included for exchanging prisoners of war, and between February 12 and April 4 of that year, 591 Americans were returned from North Vietnam, as well as several from South Vietnam, Laos, and China, aboard C-141A Starlifters and other aircraft. Known as Operation Homecoming, these flights to freedom took the ex-POWs to Clark Air Base in the Philippines for medical exams, good meals, and fresh uniforms before they were transported home to the United States; and |
WHEREAS, On the Fortieth Anniversary of Operation Homecoming, we recognize those brave individuals who have answered this nation's call to arms and have made great sacrifices in service to the United States of America. This solemn occasion is, indeed, an appropriate time to pay tribute to all Vietnam War veterans, including some 1,800 who are still listed as missing in action, for they combined courage and dedication with tremendous strength and resolve during their loyal service on behalf of our country, earning the respect and gratitude of Americans everywhere; and |
WHEREAS, The heroic traditions of our armed forces are an important part of our nation's heritage. U.S. veterans have provided a valuable service to our country and have established a record of achievement that will long stand as a hallmark worthy of emulation. They have certainly distinguished themselves as patriotic and hard-working Americans, and they are truly deserving of high praise; therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, commemorate the Fortieth Anniversary of Operation Homecoming and, in so doing, honor our brave citizens who served during the Vietnam War; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to the news media of Ohio. |
