A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To commemorate the War of 1812 and the Battle of Lake 1
Erie and to recognize northwest Ohio's important 2
role in the war.3


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):


       WHEREAS, The War of 1812 occurred between the United States 4
of America and Great Britain from 1812 to 1815; and5

       WHEREAS, During that war, American and British forces fought 6
several crucial battles in the Northwest Territory because of the 7
region's strategic importance; and8

       WHEREAS, Northwest Ohio, with its access to the Great Lakes, 9
to Fort Detroit, and to Canada, served a particularly significant 10
role during the war; and11

       WHEREAS, After the fall of Detroit in August 1812, the 12
British took control of Lake Erie and thus secured British supply 13
lines between the United States and Canada; and14

       WHEREAS, In the Battle of Lake Erie, which took place on 15
September 10, 1813, American sailors under the command of 16
Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry defeated the British Lake Erie 17
squadron near the Bass Islands; and18

       WHEREAS, America's victory in the Battle of Lake Erie was a 19
direct result of the extraordinary bravery of Commodore Perry and 20
the men who served under him, especially those who were killed or 21
wounded; and22

       WHEREAS, The restoration of American control over Lake Erie, 23
in severing British supply lines and allowing United States forces 24
to recapture Detroit, proved to be a key turning point in the war; 25
and 26

       WHEREAS, In winning the War of 1812, the United States 27
affirmed its independence from British rule and established itself 28
as a formidable naval power; now therefore be it29

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly 30
of the State of Ohio, commemorate the War of 1812 and the Battle 31
of Lake Erie and recognize northwest Ohio's important role in the 32
war; and be it further33

       RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives 34
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the news 35
media of Ohio.36
