A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To urge the United States Congress to approve and 1
fund a hydrological separation of the Great Lakes 2
and Mississippi River watersheds to stop the 3
spread of Asian carp.4


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):


       WHEREAS, Due to their large size and rapid rate of 5
reproduction, Asian carp could pose a significant risk to the 6
Great Lakes ecosystem and the economies of the Great Lakes states. 7
The Great Lakes region fishing industry is valued at 7 billion 8
dollars annually; and9

       WHEREAS, Asian carp have been found in the Mississippi River; 10
and11

       WHEREAS, A hydrological separation of the Great Lakes and 12
Mississippi River watersheds could stop the spread of Asian carp 13
and protect the Great Lakes from other invasive species. The 14
separation could be accomplished by rerouting the Chicago Area 15
Waterway System; now therefore be it16

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly 17
of the State of Ohio, urge the United States Congress to approve 18
and fund a hydrological separation of the Great Lakes and 19
Mississippi River watersheds by rerouting the Chicago Area 20
Waterway System in order to stop the spread of Asian carp; and be 21
it further 22

       RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives 23
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the 24
President of the United States, to the Speaker and Clerk of the 25
United States House of Representatives, to the President Pro 26
Tempore and Secretary of the United States Senate, to the members 27
of the Ohio Congressional delegation, and to the news media of 28
Ohio. 29
