A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie.

WHEREAS,  On June 18, 1812, the United States of America declared war on Great Britain, and as a result, battles were waged throughout the U.S., with our state becoming a front line for many of these skirmishes. On September 10, 1813, the American fleet on Lake Erie, under the command of Oliver Hazard Perry, engaged British forces near Put-in-Bay, Ohio, forcing them to surrender and making Perry a national hero; and

The capture of the British fleet on Lake Erie was one of the most decisive naval battles that our nation has ever fought, giving the United States control of the region, helping to lead to the end of the War of 1812 and an affirmation of our independence, and contributing to the eventual peace, friendship, and cooperation among the United States, Canada, and Great Britain; and

WHEREAS,  The Two Hundredth Anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie is an appropriate time to honor those brave sailors and marines who answered this country's call to arms and who made sacrifices in service to the United States of America. They combined tremendous strength and resolve with a high degree of bravery to distinguish themselves as truly patriotic individuals; therefore be it
