A RESOLUTION
Honoring the American Cancer Society on its Centennial.

WHEREAS,  The members of the House of Representatives of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to extend special recognition to the American Cancer Society on the auspicious occasion of its One Hundredth Anniversary; and

WHEREAS,  Founded on May 22, 1913, as the American Society for the Control of Cancer, the American Cancer Society began making fundraising for cancer research its priority in 1944, and it has since become the largest non-governmental, non-profit benefactor of cancer research. In addition, it was instrumental in the passage of the Cancer Act of 1971, which created the National Cancer Institute to fund research, and one of ACS's volunteers launched the largest grassroots fundraiser in the world, the Relay for Life, in 1985; and

WHEREAS,  In 1950, the American Cancer Society made a connection between lung cancer and smoking, leading to education and laws to reduce smoking rates, and in 2003, it also linked obesity to most types of cancer. Among its endeavors, the society started the National Cancer Information Center in 1997 to answer the public's questions about cancer, and its affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, has helped pass Food and Drug Administration regulations for tobacco products; and

WHEREAS,  Due to the American Cancer Society's tremendous efforts in prevention, detection, and treatment, the number of cancer deaths in the United States declined for the first time in 2006. By 2012, cancer death rates were down by twenty percent, the equivalent of 1.2 million lives; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, congratulate the American Cancer Society on its One Hundredth Anniversary and extend best wishes for the future; and be it further

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to the Ohio American Cancer Society.
