A RESOLUTION
To urge the National Park Service in the U.S. 1
Department of the Interior to submit, at the 2
earliest possible time, the nomination of the 3
Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, including the Fort 4
Ancient Earthworks, the Newark Earthworks, and the 5
Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, to the 6
World Heritage Committee for inscription on the 7
World Heritage List.8


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

       WHEREAS, The Fort Ancient Earthworks in Warren County, the 9
Newark Earthworks in Licking County, and the Hopewell Culture 10
National Historical Park in Ross County are all outstanding 11
examples of the ceremonial earthworks that were built 2,000 years 12
ago by the indigenous Eastern Woodland people now known as the 13
Hopewell culture. The earthworks are internationally significant 14
and nationally recognized archaeological sites in Ohio and 15
represent the greatest achievements of this extraordinary 16
civilization whose cultural center was located in the area that is 17
today known as Ohio; and18

       WHEREAS, The investigations of those sites were important 19
foundations for scientific archaeology in North America. In 20
addition, the sites were some of the first archaeological sites to 21
be preserved in the United States; and22

       WHEREAS, The National Park Service in the U.S. Department of 23
the Interior periodically selects sites from its Tentative List, 24
which was compiled and submitted by the United States in 2008 to 25
the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, 26
Scientific, and Cultural Committee, for nomination to the World 27
Heritage List. The World Heritage List identifies the world's most 28
important cultural and natural heritage sites; and29

       WHEREAS, Currently, the Fort Ancient Earthworks, the Newark 30
Earthworks, and the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, 31
together known as the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, are on the 32
Tentative List. The Ohio Historical Society and the Hopewell 33
Culture National Historical Park and their partners on the Ohio 34
World Heritage Committee have made significant progress in 35
preparing supporting documentation for the nomination of the 36
Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks to the World Heritage List; now 37
therefore be it38

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 130th 39
General Assembly of the State of Ohio, urge the National Park 40
Service in the U.S. Department of the Interior to submit, at the 41
earliest possible time, the nomination of the Hopewell Ceremonial 42
Earthworks, including the Fort Ancient Earthworks, the Newark 43
Earthworks, and the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, to 44
the World Heritage Committee for inscription on the World Heritage 45
List; and be it further46

       RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate send duly 47
authenticated copies of this resolution to the Ohio Historical 48
Society, the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, the 49
National Park Service, and the news media of Ohio.50
