A RESOLUTION

To urge the National Park Service in the United 1
States Department of the Interior to include the 2
Fort Ancient Earthworks, the Newark Earthworks, 3
the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, 4
SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park, 5
and Serpent Mound on the United States World 6
Heritage Tentative List to be submitted to the 7
United Nations for inclusion on the World Heritage 8
List. 9

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

       WHEREAS, The Fort Ancient Earthworks in Warren County, the 10
Newark Earthworks in Licking County, the Hopewell Culture National 11
Historical Park in Ross County, SunWatch Indian Village and 12
Archaeological Park in Montgomery County, and Serpent Mound in 13
Adams County are all outstanding examples of internationally 14
significant and nationally recognized archaeological sites in 15
Ohio; and 16

       WHEREAS, The investigations of those sites were important 17
foundations for scientific archaeology in North America. In 18
addition, the sites were some of the first archaeological sites to 19
be preserved in the United States; and 20

       WHEREAS, The National Park Service in the United States 21
Department of the Interior is compiling a list of natural and 22
cultural heritage properties from which it will select nominees 23
for submission to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and 24
Cultural Organization for listing on the World Heritage List, a 25
list of the world's cultural and natural heritage sites; and 26

       WHEREAS, The Fort Ancient Earthworks, the Newark Earthworks, 27
and the sites that comprise the Hopewell Culture National 28
Historical Park are being submitted to the National Park Service 29
by the Ohio Historical Society and the Hopewell Culture National 30
Historical Park as a group for a serial nomination of earthworks 31
constructed by the Hopewell culture. In addition, those groups are 32
joining with the SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park 33
in submitting that site and Serpent Mound to the Service as a 34
separate group; now therefore be it 35

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 130th 36
General Assembly of the State of Ohio, urge the National Park 37
Service in the United States Department of the Interior to include 38

Culture National Historical Park, SunWatch Indian Village and 40

and the news media of Ohio. 48
