A RESOLUTION
In memory of President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio offer our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the family and many friends of President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on the sorrowful occasion of his death; and

WHEREAS, An anti-apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela left an indelible impression on the people whose lives he touched, and he will long be remembered for his belief in human dignity, racial equality, and non-violence. He served with the African National Congress, where he was instrumental in forming the ANC Youth League, and co-founded South Africa's first black law firm, Mandela and Tambo, before being imprisoned for twenty-seven years for his efforts to end government discrimination in South Africa. He was released from imprisonment in 1990, and in 1994, he was inaugurated as the country's first democratically elected president, a post he held for one term; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Mandela's concern for improving the quality of life in South African society was clearly evident in the number of honors and awards bestowed upon him, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. Giving generously of his time, energy, and abilities far beyond what was required or expected, he displayed exceptional concern and insight and was tireless in his efforts to better the world around him, which he demonstrated by establishing the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and The Mandela Rhodes Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Although there are no words to ease the sadness now felt, surely there is solace in having been touched by such an outstanding person as Nelson Mandela. The love, compassion, and understanding that he so readily extended to others will long remain in the hearts and minds of all who knew him, including his children and grandchildren; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, pay tribute to the memory of a truly honorable man, President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to the family of President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

I, Vincent L. Keeran, hereby certify that the above is a true and correct copy of Senate Resolution No. 258, adopted by the Ohio Senate, January 29, 2014.
