BILL SUMMARY
· Expands the locations at which dental hygienists may practice to include public or private clinics, mobile dental units, Headstart programs or facilities, patient homes, or any other location approved by the State Dental Board.
· Makes an appropriation.
CONTENT AND OPERATION
Under current law, a dental hygienist must practice under the supervision, order, control, and full responsibility of a dentist licensed under Ohio law and may practice in a dental office, public or private school, health care facility,[1] dispensary, or public institution. The bill expands the locations at which a dental hygienist may practice to include public or private clinics, mobile dental units, Headstart programs and facilities, patients' homes, and other locations approved by the State Dental Board.[2] The bill does not modify the requirements of current law governing supervision of dental hygienists by dentists.

[1] "Health care
facility" means a hospital or a home.
A home is an institution, residence, or facility that provides, for a
period of more than 24 hours, whether for a consideration or not,
accommodations to three or more unrelated individuals who are dependent on the
services of others, including a nursing home, residential care facility, home
for the aging, a veterans' home, nursing facility, or county or district home
licensed as a residential care facility (R.C. 4715.22 and R.C. 3721.01, not in
the bill).
[2] The bill specifically
includes nursing homes, but this is unnecessary because current law permits
dental hygienists to practice in nursing homes. (Nursing homes are included in current law as health care
facilities.)
