H.B. 325
127th General Assembly
(As Introduced)
·
Makes persons who served in the armed forces of the
United States in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom or in Iraq
during Operation Iraqi Freedom and who are on active duty or are honorably
discharged veterans eligible to apply for and receive veterans license plates
that currently are available to veterans of other military actions and wars.
Current law provides that any person who served in the armed
forces of the United States in certain areas of military action or during
certain wars and who is on active duty or is an honorably discharged veteran
may apply to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles for the registration of any
passenger car, noncommercial motor vehicle, recreational vehicle, or other
vehicle of a class approved by the Registrar the person owns or leases. The areas and wars specified include in
Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm or in Kuwait during Operation Desert
Shield, in Panama, Grenada, or Lebanon during those respective invasions,
during the Vietnam or Korean conflicts, or during World War II or World War
I. Upon receipt of an application for
registration of a motor vehicle under the applicable provisions, presentation
of satisfactory evidence of the required military service, and payment of the
regular license tax and any applicable local tax, the Registrar is required to
issue to the applicant the appropriate motor vehicle registration and a set of
license plates and a validation sticker, or a validation sticker alone when
required by existing law. In accordance
with rules adopted by the Registrar, each license plate is inscribed with
identifying letters or numerals and the word "VETERAN" and also with
a design and words indicating service in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Panama, Grenada,
or Lebanon, or during the Vietnam or Korean conflict, or during World War II or
World War I. (R.C. 4503.53.)
The bill makes any person who served in the
armed forces of the United States in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring
Freedom or in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and who is on active duty or
is an honorably discharged veteran eligible to apply for and to receive these
veterans license plates after presenting satisfactory evidence of such military
service at the time of application. The
person is required to comply with all other applicable registration
requirements and pay the required fees.
In such a case, the license plates the person receives will be inscribed
with a design and words indicating service in Afghanistan or Iraq, as
appropriate.
