BILL SUMMARY

·        Designates the portion of Interstate Route 275 located within Clermont County only as the "Matt Maupin Highway" and authorizes the Director of Transportation to erect suitable markers along the highway indicating its name.

CONTENT AND OPERATION

Current law designates Interstate Highway 275, which is located in southwest Ohio and encircles a large portion of the Greater Cincinnati area, as the "Donald H. Rolf Circle Freeway" (R.C. 5533.25, not in the bill).  The bill provides that in addition to this existing designation, the portion of Interstate 275 located within Clermont County only also is to be known as the "Matt Maupin Highway."  The Director of Transportation is authorized to erect suitable markers along the highway indicating its name.  If the Director does so, the markers must read "Matt Maupin Highway" and "Matt Maupin – Captured April 9, 2004, Iraq."  (R.C. 5533.92.)

COMMENT

United States Army Private First Class Matt Maupin was declared captured and missing after the convoy in which he was traveling was attacked near Baghdad, Iraq, on April 9, 2004.  During the time he was missing, he was promoted to Specialist, then to Sergeant, and then to Staff Sergeant.  On March 20, 2008, his remains were located near Baghdad and positively identified.
