BILL SUMMARY
· Permits persons who are age 16 to donate blood, with parental consent, in voluntary nonprofit programs.
CONTENT AND OPERATION

Current law permits a person who is at least 17 years old to donate blood in a voluntary, nonprofit blood program. Consent of the person's parent or guardian is not required. Blood programs that seek blood donations from students at secondary schools are required to disseminate written information specifying that students will be asked to give blood.
The bill lowers the minimum age for blood donation in a voluntary, nonprofit blood program to 16, but requires that a 16-year-old have consent of the person's parent or guardian.
