BILL SUMMARY

·         Designates May as "ALS Awareness Month."

CONTENT AND OPERATION

ALS Awareness Month

(R.C. 5.2266)

The bill designates May as "ALS Awareness Month" to (1) increase public awareness and understanding of ALS and (2) encourage efforts in finding treatments and a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is described by the bill as a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord causing progressive muscle weakness and paralysis, and eventually death, while the patient's mental capacity and awareness of the disease remain unaffected.  The bill specifies that because there is no known cause, prevention, or cure for ALS, the General Assembly finds it vitally important to designate May as "ALS Awareness Month."
