A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION | To urge the United States Congress to approve and
fund a hydrological separation of the Great Lakes
and Mississippi River watersheds to stop the
spread of Asian carp.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO (THE SENATE CONCURRING):
WHEREAS, Due to their large size and rapid rate of
reproduction, Asian carp could pose a significant risk to the
Great Lakes ecosystem and the economies of the Great Lakes states.
The Great Lakes region fishing industry is valued at 7 billion
dollars annually; and |
WHEREAS, Asian carp have been found in the Mississippi River;
and |
WHEREAS, A hydrological separation of the Great Lakes and
Mississippi River watersheds could stop the spread of Asian carp
and protect the Great Lakes from other invasive species. The
separation could be accomplished by rerouting the Chicago Area
Waterway System; now therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly
of the State of Ohio, urge the United States Congress to approve
and fund a hydrological separation of the Great Lakes and
Mississippi River watersheds by rerouting the Chicago Area
Waterway System in order to stop the spread of Asian carp; and be
it further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the
President of the United States, to the Speaker and Clerk of the
United States House of Representatives, to the President Pro
Tempore and Secretary of the United States Senate, to the members
of the Ohio Congressional delegation, and to the news media of
Ohio. |
