A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To urge the United States Congress to approve and fund a hydrological separation of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds to stop the spread of Asian carp.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):

WHEREAS, Due to their large size and rapid rate of reproduction, Asian carp could pose a significant risk to the Great Lakes ecosystem and the economies of the Great Lakes states. The Great Lakes region fishing industry is valued at 7 billion dollars annually; and

WHEREAS, Asian carp have been found in the Mississippi River; and

WHEREAS, A hydrological separation of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds could stop the spread of Asian carp and protect the Great Lakes from other invasive species. The separation could be accomplished by rerouting the Chicago Area Waterway System; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly of the State of Ohio, urge the United States Congress to approve and fund a hydrological separation of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds by rerouting the Chicago Area Waterway System in order to stop the spread of Asian carp; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the President of the United States, to the Speaker and Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, to the President Pro Tempore and Secretary of the United States Senate, to the members of the Ohio Congressional delegation, and to the news media of Ohio.
