H. R. No. 153

A RESOLUTION

Representative Hackett

Recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month, October 2009.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to recognize October 2009 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Ohio; and

WHEREAS, This year marks the twenty-second anniversary of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this occasion is an appropriate time to lend support to those whose lives are devastated by continual violence. A national crime victimization survey indicates that approximately 2.3 million victims have violent crimes committed against them by current or former spouses, boyfriends, and girlfriends each year, affecting not only those being abused or neglected but also children and others who may witness the violence; and

WHEREAS, Many Ohioans have made an unselfish commitment to protecting the victims of domestic violence by establishing emergency shelters for those who find they have nowhere else to turn, and communities throughout Ohio and the United States are trying to raise awareness of domestic violence with purple ribbons, which are worn in support of survivors and victims. We applaud all those who have worked so diligently to assist some of society's most vulnerable citizens; and

WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month is designed to increase public awareness of the far reaching devastation of this heinous crime, and it is a fitting time to educate Ohioans, as well as our nation's general public, about the need to provide guidance and support to those individuals and families that are affected by domestic violence; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, recognize October 2009 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Ohio and urge all citizens and communities to help prevent domestic violence; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to the news media of Ohio.
