H. R. No. 220

A RESOLUTION

Representatives Szollosi, Brown, Murray, Sears, Ujvagi

Honoring The Blade on its One Hundred Seventy-fifth Anniversary.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to congratulate The Blade on the One Hundred Seventy-fifth Anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS, Established in 1835 as The Toledo Blade, this outstanding newspaper predates the incorporation of the City of Toledo, making it the oldest continuing business in the city. Since the days of the Ohio-Michigan War, it has been believed that The Blade would "always leap from its scabbard whenever the rights of individuals, or the community, shall be infringed," and in 2004, it received journalism's highest honor, the Pulitzer Prize, for its extensive investigative report that uncovered and detailed improprieties during the Vietnam War. Upon receiving the award, John Robinson Block, publisher of the newspaper, said, "For many, many years, it has been our objective to publish in Toledo a newspaper that would be respected and would have the highest ethics and the highest quality journalism that we can give people every day," and it has, indeed, become one of America's great news publications; and

WHEREAS, One of America's great newspapers, The Blade was owned by the Locke family until 1926, when it was purchased by Block Communications, Inc., a privately-held, diversified media company founded in 1900 by Paul Block, who sold national advertising and published eleven newspapers. Four generations of the Block family and their employees have continuously supported the communities in which they live and work. , BCI currently operates cable and broadcast television stations, publishes The Blade and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette daily newspapers, and runs high-speed Internet and telephone services, and ably led by Allan Block, it employs three thousand people across the country; and

WHEREAS, Throughout its history, The Blade has provided comprehensive coverage of current events and of vital issues that affect the community. Its accomplishments are a justifiable source of pride and a fine reflection not only on the newspaper itself but also on its astute management, on its hard-working staff, and on the Northwest Ohio area. We are certain that in the years to come, this exemplary newspaper will continue to be a vital and valued community resource; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, applaud The Blade on its One Hundred Seventy-fifth Anniversary and salute its management and staff as fine Ohioans; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to The Blade.
