To condemn the payment of $165 million in executive bonuses by the American International Group and demand that AIG return the $165 million to the federal government.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

WHEREAS, The United States is experiencing the worst recession since the Great Depression. During this time the federal government is doing all that it can to provide for the needs of the American people; and

WHEREAS, One of the key tools in the federal government's economic recovery efforts is the loaning of money to large corporations in the financial services industry for the purposes of providing extra liquidity to those corporations, thereby enabling them to extend credit to other corporations and individuals. A major benefactor of these loans has been the American International Group (AIG), which has received $170 billion to date; and

WHEREAS, In March 2009, AIG reported that it had lost $61.7 billion for the fourth quarter of the previous year, the largest corporate loss in history. Even though the corporation experienced such a huge loss, it still decided to provide $165 million in executive bonuses; and

WHEREAS, At a time when American families are struggling to make ends meet and our towns and cities are hurting to provide the services that Americans need and expect, it is despicable to see AIG act with such a callous disregard of our country's economic situation by giving away such enormous amounts of money to its executives; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 128th General Assembly of the State of Ohio, condemn the payment of $165 million in executive bonuses by the American International Group (AIG) and demand that AIG return the $165 million to the federal government; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the President of the United States, to the Speaker and Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, to the President Pro Tempore and Secretary of the United States Senate, to the members of the Ohio Congressional delegation, to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American International Group, and to the news media of Ohio.
