H. R. No. 61

A RESOLUTION

Representative Morgan

Recognizing the National Day of Prayer, May 7, 2009.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to take this opportunity to recognize Ohio's observance of the National Day of Prayer, May 7, 2009; and

WHEREAS, The National Day of Prayer has been an integral part of our country's heritage since the first event was declared by the Continental Congress in 1775. In 1952, a joint action of the United States Congress called upon the President to set aside one day each year as a National Day of Prayer, inviting all Americans to unite in prayer for our nation and its leaders. This annual occurrence was officially designated as the first Thursday of every May by legislation ratified on May 5, 1988, thereby perpetuating the tradition started over two centuries ago by the Continental Congress; and

WHEREAS, Conceived in a spirit of universal love and fellowship, the National Day of Prayer encourages all citizens to pay grateful and humble tribute to what Abraham Lincoln described as "the Supreme Government of God." Throughout our country's history, in times of war and peace, prosperity and depression, joy and sorrow, national leaders and individuals of all stations in life have prayed for guidance, wisdom, and strength. As we face the enormous challenges inherent in a complex and rapidly changing world, we can draw inspiration, faith, and courage from the religious freedom given to us by America's founding fathers; and

WHEREAS, On the occasion of the National Day of Prayer, we encourage all Ohioans to reflect on the role of religion in our society and on the rights of all citizens to freedom of worship granted under the Ohio Constitution and the Constitution of the United States of America. It is not only our right and privilege but also our responsibility to set aside at least one day a year to reflect upon the tremendous historical significance, as well as the continuing need for, and importance of, prayer in our society; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, recognize the National Day of Prayer, May 7, 2009, and, in so doing, urge all Ohioans to take part in this important observance; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to the news media of Ohio.
