S. R. No. 271

A RESOLUTION

Senator Fedor

In memory of the Honorable Thomas Ludlow Ashley.
WHEREAS,  The members of the Senate of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio were deeply saddened to learn of the death of the Honorable Thomas Ludlow Ashley and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends; and

WHEREAS,  Thomas Ashley left an indelible impression on the people whose lives he touched, and he will be remembered as a truly spirited individual. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was elected to Congress in 1954, serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Ohio's Ninth Congressional District for thirteen terms before his defeat in 1980, and he was instrumental in the passing of the Housing and Community Development Acts of 1974 and 1977 and receiving funding for such projects as the dredging of improvement of the Port of Toledo, making it one of the nation's leading ports; and

WHEREAS,  Thomas Ashley's regard for improving the quality of life in our society was clearly evident in his personal sacrifices of time and effort to his family, friends, and community. The love, compassion, and understanding he so readily extended to others will long remain in the hearts and minds of all who knew him, and his absence will be keenly felt; and

WHEREAS,  In numerous roles, Thomas Ashley used his talents to the benefit of others, and the laurels of his life stand as a tribute not only to him but also to those he left behind, including his three children, Meredith, Mark, and Lise. Although the void his death has created can never be filled, the legacy he established will surely live on; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the Senate of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, express sincere regret at the death of the Honorable Thomas Ludlow Ashley and, in so doing, pay tribute to the memory of this unique individual; and be it further

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to the family of the Honorable Thomas Ludlow Ashley.

I, Vincent L. Keeran, hereby certify that the above is a true and correct copy of Senate Resolution No. 271, adopted by the Ohio Senate, July 14, 2010.
