WHEREAS,  The members of the Senate of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of First Lieutenant Michael Runyan on the sorrowful occasion of his death; and

WHEREAS,  Although there are no words to ease the sorrow now felt, surely there is solace in the remembrance of having known such an outstanding individual. A 2004 graduate of Ashland High School, where he excelled in golf and participated in swimming and tennis, and a 2008 graduate of Xavier University, where he was active with the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Michael Runyan was a platoon leader with the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 25th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, and he was serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom when he was killed in the line of duty. His valiant efforts were truly admirable, and his absence will be keenly felt; and

WHEREAS,  In many significant endeavors, Michael Runyan always used his talents to the benefit of others, and the laurels of his life stand as a tribute not only to him but also to those he left behind, including his parents, Jeffrey and Renee, and his siblings, Alex and Lesley. The great traditions of our country's service men and women are an important chapter of American history, and his family and friends can be proud of the sacrifices he made to ensure freedom and justice for all people; and

WHEREAS,  Although the void his death has created can never be filled, Michael Runyan will be remembered as a spirited individual who contributed immeasurably to the world around him. It is certain that the world is a richer place for his having been in it, and he will be sorely missed; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the Senate of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, mourn the loss and salute the memory of a truly unique individual, First Lieutenant Michael Runyan; and be it further

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to the family of First Lieutenant Michael Runyan.
