S. R. No. 32

A RESOLUTION

Senators Goodman, Hughes

Recognizing Tartan Day in Ohio, April 6, 2009.
WHEREAS,  The members of the Senate of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to recognize April 6, 2009, as Tartan Day in Ohio in honor of the Independence of Scotland; and

WHEREAS,  On April 6, 1320, the Scottish Parliament met at Arbroath Abbey and declared the independence of Scotland, voicing the right to choose their own form of government in words that were a template and inspiration for our own Declaration of Independence. On March 20, 1998, the United States Senate unanimously passed a Resolution establishing April 6th of each year as National Tartan Day in honor of this Scottish Independence Day; and

WHEREAS,  It is, indeed, fitting that Tartan Day be observed in Ohio by organizations such as the Reynoldsburg Senior Citizen Center, which will hold an event April 4, for this celebration is an entertaining and educational event which greatly increases awareness and understanding of Scottish culture, as well as an appreciation for the important role the Scottish people have played in the history of the United States. In addition, Ohio has its own tartan, designed by Merry Jayne McMichael, with the colors of the Ohio flag, the Great Seal, and other state symbols, and after being approved by the Scottish Tartan Society, it was registered as the Ohio Tartan on March 29, 1984; and

WHEREAS,  The United States of America has been enriched immeasurably by the ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity of its populace, and because we, as Americans, appreciate and respect the backgrounds of each of our nation's citizens, we are pleased to join in the celebration of the independence of Scotland. We are proud to pay tribute to all individuals of Scottish descent and recognize the contributions they have made to the Great State of Ohio and to our nation; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the Senate of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, recognize April 6, 2009, as Tartan Day in Ohio and encourage all Ohioans to participate in the activities commemorating this special occasion; and be it further

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to the Scottish American Society, the Reynoldsburg Senior Citizen Center, and to the news media of Ohio.

I, Vincent L. Keeran, hereby certify that the above is a true and correct copy of Senate Resolution No. 32, adopted by the Ohio Senate, April 1, 2009.
