S. R. No. 50
A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the National Day of Prayer, May 7, 2009.
WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to recognize May 7, 2009, as the National Day of Prayer; and |
WHEREAS, The National Day of Prayer is a tradition first proclaimed by the Continental Congress in 1775, and days of prayer and fasting have continued throughout the years, particularly during troubled times. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln called the nation to a day of prayer and humility to acknowledge the sins that had nearly brought America to destruction during the Civil War. President Dwight D. Eisenhower revived the National Day of Prayer in 1952, and although it continued, Congress needed to pass a new bill each year to do so, making advanced planning difficult. On May 5, 1988, legislation was unanimously ratified by both houses of Congress and signed by President Ronald Reagan to establish an annual National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday of every May; and |
WHEREAS, The Ohio National Day of Prayer Task Force was founded in 1991. Former Governor George V. Voinovich issued a proclamation to encourage Ohioans to participate in the annual Day of Prayer, and both the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate passed resolutions to support these observances. May 7 marks this year's observance of the National Day of Prayer; and |
WHEREAS, Ohio is proud to be called home by citizens of many different cultures and religions who contribute to the vast social fabric of America and, in particular, to the character and diversity of our state. It is, indeed, fitting and proper to observe this day in Ohio, acknowledging our blessings and expressing gratitude for them while recognizing the need for strengthening religious and moral values in our state and nation; therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 128th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, recognize May 7, 2009, as the National Day of Prayer and urge all citizens to observe this day in ways relevant to its importance and significance; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to the news media of Ohio. |
I, Vincent L. Keeran, hereby certify that the above is a true
and correct copy of Senate Resolution No. 50, adopted by the Ohio Senate,
May 5, 2009. |
