A RESOLUTION

Senators Cates, Kearney, Seitz

To memorialize the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, Allen "Bud" Selig, to select the Cincinnati Reds as the host team of the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

WHEREAS, The Major League Baseball All-Star Game, also popularly known as the "Midsummer Classic," is an annual baseball game between players from the National Baseball League and the American Baseball League. The players who participate in the All-Star Game are selected by a combination of fans, players, coaches, and managers and are recognized as the most talented players in Major League Baseball; and

WHEREAS, The All-Star Game is played in early to mid-July and marks the symbolic halfway point in Major League Baseball. Each year the game is hosted by a Major League Baseball team in its home stadium, with the venue generally alternating between a National League host team and an American League host team; and

WHEREAS, The Cincinnati Reds of the National League last hosted an All-Star Game in 1988. However, that All-Star game was hosted in the Reds' former stadium, Riverfront Stadium. Since that time, the Reds have constructed a new state-of-the-art baseball stadium, Great-American Ball Park; and

WHEREAS, The Cincinnati Reds are recognized as the first professional baseball team. Founded in 1866 as the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the Cincinnati ball club became a professional team in 1869. Over the course of the history of the Cincinnati Reds franchise, the Reds have won five World Series Championships and nine National League Pennants and have over thirty-five players, managers, and play-by-play broadcasters enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York; and

WHEREAS, Fans of the Cincinnati Reds hail not only from the City of Cincinnati but also from communities throughout Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and elsewhere in the United States. Cincinnati Reds fans are widely known as some of the most devoted fans in baseball, and the City of Cincinnati is recognized as one of the premier baseball cities in North America; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 128th General Assembly of the State of Ohio, in adopting this resolution, memorialize the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, Allen "Bud" Selig, to select the Cincinnati Reds as the host team of the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, appropriate officials from the Cincinnati Reds, and the news media of Ohio.

I, Vincent L. Keeran, hereby certify that the above is a true and correct copy of Senate Resolution No. 59, adopted by the Ohio Senate, May 21, 2009.
