A RESOLUTION

To memorialize the Commissioner of Major League
Baseball, Allen "Bud" Selig, to select the
Cincinnati Reds as the host team of the 2013 Major
League Baseball All-Star Game.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO:
WHEREAS, The Major League Baseball All-Star Game, also
popularly known as the "Midsummer Classic," is an annual baseball
game between players from the National Baseball League and the
American Baseball League. The players who participate in the
All-Star Game are selected by a combination of fans, players,
coaches, and managers and are recognized as the most talented
players in Major League Baseball; and |
WHEREAS, The All-Star Game is played in early to mid-July and
marks the symbolic halfway point in Major League Baseball. Each
year the game is hosted by a Major League Baseball team in its
home stadium, with the venue generally alternating between a
National League host team and an American League host team; and |
WHEREAS, The Cincinnati Reds of the National League last
hosted an All-Star Game in 1988. However, that All-Star game was
hosted in the Reds' former stadium, Riverfront Stadium. Since that
time, the Reds have constructed a new state-of-the-art baseball
stadium, Great-American Ball Park; and |
WHEREAS, The Cincinnati Reds are recognized as the first
professional baseball team. Founded in 1866 as the Cincinnati Red
Stockings, the Cincinnati ball club became a professional team in
1869. Over the course of the history of the Cincinnati Reds
franchise, the Reds have won five World Series Championships and
nine National League Pennants and have over thirty-five players,
managers, and play-by-play broadcasters enshrined in the National
Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York; and |
WHEREAS, Fans of the Cincinnati Reds hail not only from the
City of Cincinnati but also from communities throughout Ohio,
Indiana, Kentucky, and elsewhere in the United States. Cincinnati
Reds fans are widely known as some of the most devoted fans in
baseball, and the City of Cincinnati is recognized as one of the
premier baseball cities in North America; now therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 128th
General Assembly of the State of Ohio, in adopting this
resolution, memorialize the Commissioner of Major League Baseball,
Allen "Bud" Selig, to select the Cincinnati Reds as the host team
of the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly
authenticated copies of this resolution to the Commissioner of
Major League Baseball, appropriate officials from the Cincinnati
Reds, and the news media of Ohio. |
