A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION | To urge the Administration of President Barack Obama
to reconsider proposals to increase taxes on
producers of coal, natural gas, and petroleum and
instead commit to adopting policies that encourage
domestic production of these important resources.
|
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO (THE SENATE CONCURRING):
WHEREAS, Coal, natural gas, and petroleum are vital to our
national economy and comprise almost 70% of the energy used to
produce electricity in the United States. In addition, fuel oil
derived from petroleum and natural gas are the primary heating
fuels used in many parts of the nation, including Ohio; and |
WHEREAS, Petroleum is used in a broad spectrum of products
such as fuel for motor vehicles and aircraft, asphalt for roads,
tars for roofing, and waxes for food wrapping. Petroleum is used
as well in solvents for paints, cosmetics, and dry cleaning
products and provides the building blocks for many plastics and
foams; and |
WHEREAS, The Administration of President Barack Obama has
proposed increasing taxes on producers of coal, natural gas, and
petroleum in its latest budget proposal. Increasing taxes on these
vital resources will hinder economic growth, cost consumers
billions of additional dollars in heating fuel costs, result in
increased prices for a myriad of other products, and hinder the
domestic production of fossil fuels, thus increasing our reliance
on foreign imports; and |
WHEREAS, The burden of additional costs to consumers will
fall disproportionately on those citizens of the United States who
are least able to afford them; and |
WHEREAS, The United States has abundant proven reserves of
coal, natural gas, and petroleum, and increasing their production
will benefit the nation's economy by lowering the cost of energy
and reducing our reliance on foreign sources of fuel; now
therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 129th General Assembly
of the State of Ohio, in adopting this resolution, strongly urge
the Administration of President Barack Obama to reconsider
proposals to increase taxes on producers of coal, natural gas, and
petroleum and instead commit to adopting policies that encourage
domestic production of these important resources; and be it

Barack Obama, the Speaker and Clerk of the United States House of
Representatives, the President Pro Tempore and Secretary of the
United States Senate, the members of the Ohio Congressional
delegation, and the news media of Ohio. |
