A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION | To urge Congress to pass the "Short Sea Shipping Act
of 2011."

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO (THE SENATE CONCURRING):
WHEREAS, Representatives Pat Tiberi (R-OH), Steven C.
LaTourette (R-OH), and Brian Higgins (D-NY) introduced on April
14, 2011, H.R. 1533, the "Short Sea Shipping Act of 2011"; and |
WHEREAS, The Act exempts commercial cargo loaded at a port on
the United States mainland and unloaded at a Canadian port located
in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System, cargo loaded at a
Canadian port located in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway
System and unloaded at a port on the United States mainland, or
cargo shipped between ports on the United States mainland that
travels by coastal route or river from the federal Harbor
Maintenance Tax; and |
WHEREAS, The Act has bipartisan sponsors and has received
bipartisan congressional support when considered in past sessions
of Congress; and |
WHEREAS, The Harbor Maintenance Tax keeps cargo shippers from
viewing maritime transport as a viable transportation option; and |
WHEREAS, Shipping cargo by maritime transport saves time and
fuel for shippers, reduces road and highway traffic, and reduces
pollution; and |
WHEREAS, The Act could open up new investment and encourage
economic growth and job creation in the Great Lakes region and in
the state; now therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 129th General Assembly
of the State of Ohio, urge the Speaker of the United States House
of Representatives, the President Pro Tempore of the United States
Senate, and the Congress of the United States to pass the "Short
Sea Shipping Act of 2011"; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 129th General Assembly
of the State of Ohio, express gratitude to Representatives Pat
Tiberi and Steven C. LaTourette of the United States House of
Representatives for sponsoring and introducing the "Short Sea
Shipping Act of 2011"; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the
Speaker and Clerk of the United States House of Representatives,
the President Pro Tempore and Secretary of the United States
Senate, the President of the United States, the members of the
Ohio Congressional delegation, and the news media of Ohio. |
