A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION | Declaring March 2011 as Brain Injury Awareness Month in Ohio.
|
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO (THE SENATE CONCURRING):
WHEREAS, The members of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio
are pleased to designate the month of March 2011 as Brain Injury
Awareness Month in Ohio; and |
WHEREAS, Traumatic Brain Injury is not degenerative or
congenital in nature, but it is rather caused by an external
physical force or other medical conditions, including strokes,
aneurysms, and brain tumors, that produces a diminished or altered
state of consciousness. TBI may result in impairments of cognitive
abilities, physical functioning, disturbance of behavioral and/or
emotional functioning, and even death. According to the Brain
Injury Association of America, 1.5 million people sustain a
traumatic brain injury each year, an estimated 5.3 Americans
currently live with disabilities resulting from a traumatic brain
injury, and more than 50,000 people die each year as a result of
TBI; and |
WHEREAS, In an effort to reduce the incidences of brain
injuries, it is imperative that Ohioans educate themselves on ways
to prevent such injuries from occuring and seek immediate
treatment if they do. Widespread public support is needed to
understand traumatic brain injuries, find cures, and provide
access to available life-saving therapies. The Ohio Brain Injury
Association of Ohio is helping this cause by providing advocacy,
education, and research to prevent occurances and improve
diagnosis and treatment; and |
WHEREAS, The future of our state and nation is, to a large
measure, dependent on the health of our children and families, and
good health can be achieved, in part, through responsible habits
learned early and reinforced throughout life, including wearing a
bike helmet and fastening a safety belt while in the car. Through
heightened awareness and promotion of prevention practices, the
prevalance of TBI can be greatly reduced; therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 129th General Assembly
of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, designate March 2011 as
Brain Injury Awareness Month in the State of Ohio and encourage
all citizens to learn about traumatic brain injuries and support
those affected by them; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives
transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to and the
Brain Injury Association of Ohio and the news media of Ohio. |
