A RESOLUTION

Honoring the Reverend Dr. E. Theophilus Caviness on being inducted into the 2012 International Civil Rights Walk of Fame.
       WHEREAS,  The members of the House of Representatives of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to extend special recognition to the Reverend Dr. E. Theophilus Caviness on his induction into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame, January 6, 2012; and

       WHEREAS,  E. Theophilus Caviness is, indeed, a remarkable man, combining civic concern with selfless initiative to become a respected leader in the religious community. The pastor of Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church since 1961, he is the president and chief executive officer of the Cleveland Branch of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the chairman of the board of the local chapter of the National Action Network, and the executive director and adviser of the Community Covenant Oversight Team, and through his tireless efforts, he has made many positive contributions to the world around him; and 

       WHEREAS,  Known for his long history of involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, E. Theophilus Caviness has been active with the Baptist Minister's Conference of Cleveland and Vicinity, the Inter-Church Council Planning Board, the Baptist Pastor's Council, the Ohio and National Baptist general conventions, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Congress of Racial Equality boards of directors, and he has earned the esteem and gratitude of all those who have come to know him. His superlative work is the hallmark of genuine and responsible citizenship, and he has shown the potential of individuals to have a positive effect on the quality of life in our society; and

       WHEREAS,  It is through the unsurpassed efforts and unparalleled commitment of people such as E. Theophilus Caviness that our state and nation continues to grow and prosper and remains responsive to the needs of its citizens. He has earned a well-deserved reputation as a generous and civic-minded person, and he is deserving of the highest praise for his concerted efforts in behalf of the civil rights movement; therefore be it

       RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, congratulate the Reverend Dr. E. Theophilus Caviness on receiving this coveted honor and salute him as one of Ohio's finest citizens; and be it further

       RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to the Reverend Dr. E. Theophilus Caviness.
