H. R. No. 371  As Adopted

A RESOLUTION

  Speaker Batchelder  Representative Patmon

Honoring the late Judge Lillian Walker Burke for lifetime achievement.
WHEREAS,  The members of the House of Representatives of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio extend posthumous recognition to the Honorable Lillian Walker Burke as the first African-American female judge in the State of Ohio; and

WHEREAS,  Lillian Burke's zealous love of life and her selfless concern for the welfare of others distinguished her as an outstanding human being and a leading citizen. Appointed by Governor James A. Rhodes in 1969 as a judge of the Cleveland Municipal Court, she was the first African-American female in the state to serve in such a post, where she remained until her retirement in 1987, and her dedication and devotion to public service has become a source of inspiration for others to emulate; and

WHEREAS,  Lillian Burke previously served as the secretary of the Cuyahoga County Republican Party Central Committee and was a member of the Ohio Industrial Commission, and she later joined the Music Settlement Board of Directors. Without question, she will long be remembered as a spirited individual who contributed immeasurably to the world around her; and

WHEREAS,   Lillian Burke was held in high esteem, and she was known for her deserved reputation as a person of astute judgment, exceptional initiative, and fervent commitment. She left an indelible impression on the people whose lives she touched, and her personal sacrifices of time and energy to her family and friends, to the Cleveland community, and to all those with whom she was associated will certainly live beyond her. Although the void her death has created can never be filled, the warmth and understanding she so readily extended to others will stand as a testament to her personal character, and her absence will be keenly felt; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, applaud the many contributions of the late Lillian Walker Burke and salute the memory of this fine woman; and be it further

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to the family of the late Lillian Walker Burke.
