Honoring the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862 on its Sesquicentennial.
| WHEREAS, The members of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to commend the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862 on the auspicious occasion of its One Hundred Fiftieth Anniversary; and |
| WHEREAS, Recognition of this prestigious milestone is a fitting tribute to the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862, for it has held an important place in American history. While the United States was engaged in the Civil War, Congress sought to make higher education more accessible to the public, hoping to energize the country's intellectual resources and stimulate the national economy. Signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862, the Morrill Act allocated land grants to each state in the union for the purpose of establishing public colleges and universities, and the member institutions of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities are conducting a year-long celebration of the sesquicentennial of this event; and |
| WHEREAS, The State of Ohio has benefited greatly from the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862. Founded in 1870, The Ohio State University is Ohio's land-grant institution of higher learning, and it has not only educated numerous students in various fields of study, but it has also employed a great deal of staff members, conducted groundbreaking research, contributed to the economy, and influenced the rest of the country and, indeed, the world; and |
| WHEREAS, The spirit of our nation is founded upon, and reflected in, its exciting and colorful past, and the memorializing of significant landmarks and events is vital to the preservation of America's heritage. All those involved with the observance of the One Hundred Fiftieth Anniversary of the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862 are to be applauded for their tremendous efforts to ensure that the important details of our past are transmitted to succeeding generations for their reflection and appreciation; therefore be it |
| RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, honor the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862 on its One Hundred Fiftieth Anniversary and encourage all citizens to reflect on the significance of the landmark legislation; and be it further |
| RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to The Ohio State University and the news media of Ohio. |
