Honoring John Glenn on the Fiftieth Anniversary of Friendship 7.
| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to pay tribute to John Glenn on the Fiftieth Anniversary of his historic space flight aboard Friendship 7, February 20, 2012; and |
| WHEREAS, John Glenn is certainly to be commended, for he has attained a praiseworthy record of service to space exploration. A native of Ohio, he served as an astronaut with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, becoming the first American to orbit the Earth when his Mercury space capsule, Friendship 7, circled the planet three times on February 20, 1962, and after a twenty-four-year career as a U.S. senator, he returned to space as a payload specialist aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998, becoming the oldest person to travel in space. In addition, he was instrumental in the creation of The Ohio State University John Glenn School of Public Affairs, and the NASA Lewis Research Center was renamed the Glenn Research Center in his honor in 1999; and |
| WHEREAS, John Glenn's accomplishments are a justifiable source of pride and an excellent reflection not only on him but also on his family, on NASA, and on the Great State of Ohio. He has displayed an exceptional willingness to work hard to produce superior results, and through his diligent efforts, he has inspired countless individuals to excel in numerous areas of endeavor; and |
| WHEREAS, Since the inception of the space program, astronauts have become some of America's most revered heroes. They have taken extreme personal risks to explore the farthest frontiers yet reached by humankind, providing us with an incalculable wealth of information about the universe that might otherwise be inaccessible; therefore be it |
| RESOLVED, That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, applaud John Glenn on the Fiftieth Anniversary of Friendship 7 and extend best wishes for the future; and be it further |
| RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to John Glenn. |
