H. R. No. 51  As Adopted by the House

A RESOLUTION

Representative Huffman

Recognizing the International Year of Chemistry, 2011.
WHEREAS,  The members of the House of Representatives of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to acknowledge 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry; and

WHEREAS,  As all known matter is composed of the chemical elements or of compounds made from those elements, and as all living processes are controlled by chemical reactions, humankind's understanding of the material universe is based on our knowledge of chemistry. Chemistry is a science that has transformed the world, sustaining, enhancing, and improving the quality of life for people everywhere, and chemical research is of vital importance in solving global problems involving such issues as water, food, energy, health, and the environment; and

WHEREAS,  Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education are essential to Ohio's and America's economic growth and security, and the demand for scientists and engineers is expected to increase faster than other occupations during the next decade. However, our high school students are falling behind those in major European and Asian countries in math and science scores, and fewer of them are pursuing degrees in technical fields; and

WHEREAS,  In an effort led by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry in December 2008. The purposes of this celebration are to increase public appreciation and awareness of the role chemistry plays in everyday life, to encourage young people to develop an interest in chemistry and STEM education, to emphasize the importance of chemistry to our future, and to advocate for continued public funding of STEM education; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, recognize 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry and encourage Ohioans to participate in related programs, events, and activities; and be it further

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to the Ohio Committee of the American Chemical Society.
