A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION | To commemorate the War of 1812 and the Battle of Lake
Erie and to recognize northwest Ohio's important
role in the war.
|
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO (THE SENATE CONCURRING):
WHEREAS, The War of 1812 occurred between the United States
of America and Great Britain from 1812 to 1815; and |
WHEREAS, During that war, American and British forces fought
several crucial battles in the Northwest Territory because of the
region's strategic importance; and |
WHEREAS, Northwest Ohio, with its access to the Great Lakes,
to Fort Detroit, and to Canada, served a particularly significant
role during the war; and |
WHEREAS, After the fall of Detroit in August 1812, the
British took control of Lake Erie and thus secured British supply
lines between the United States and Canada; and |
WHEREAS, In the Battle of Lake Erie, which took place on
September 10, 1813, American sailors under the command of
Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry defeated the British Lake Erie
squadron near the Bass Islands; and |
WHEREAS, America's victory in the Battle of Lake Erie was a
direct result of the extraordinary bravery of Commodore Perry and
the men who served under him, especially those who were killed or
wounded; and |
WHEREAS, The restoration of American control over Lake Erie,
in severing British supply lines and allowing United States forces
to recapture Detroit, proved to be a key turning point in the war;
and |
WHEREAS, In winning the War of 1812, the United States
affirmed its independence from British rule and established itself
as a formidable naval power; now therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly
of the State of Ohio, commemorate the War of 1812 and the Battle
of Lake Erie and recognize northwest Ohio's important role in the
war; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives
