A RESOLUTION | Honoring the late President James Abram Garfield on being selected as a 2013 Great Ohioan. |
WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio extend posthumous recognition to President James Abram Garfield on being named a 2013 Great Ohioan by the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board and the Capital Square Foundation; and |
WHEREAS, James Garfield is, indeed, worthy of the highest esteem. Born in Orange Township on November 19, 1831, he expended countless hours and seemingly inexhaustible energy in the interest of others throughout his lifetime. Among his accomplishments, he served as a professor of ancient languages and literature and president at Hiram College, a member of the Ohio Senate, a commissioned officer in the Union Army during the Civil War, a nine-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and president of the United States, a post that he held for two hundred days before being shot on July 2, 1881, and dying on September 19, 1881; and |
WHEREAS, James Garfield gave willingly of his time, abilities, and enthusiasm far beyond what was required or expected and displayed exemplary civic pride. He strove to fulfill his myriad goals in a competent and responsible manner, and through his generous contributions, he gained the appreciation and esteem of the entire nation; and |
WHEREAS, James Garfield gave back far more than he gleaned, and his innumerable contributions to the history of our nation stand as the hallmark of responsible citizenship. His steadfast commitment clearly shows the potential of individuals to have a positive effect on the quality of life in our society, and it is our hope that his sterling example will inspire others to dedicate themselves similarly; therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, salute the late President James Abram Garfield as a Great Ohioan and, in so doing, pay tribute to the memory of a truly honorable man; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to the family of the late President James Abram Garfield and the James A. Garfield National Historic Site. |
