A BILL
To enact section 2921.53 of the Revised Code to prohibit the purchase or sale of a peace officer's uniform unless the purchaser shows required identification and authorization.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF OHIO:
Section 1. That section 2921.53 of the Revised Code be enacted to read as follows:
Sec. 2921.53.  (A) As used in this section:
(1) "Peace officer" has the same meaning as in section 2921.51 of the Revised Code.
(2) "Uniform" means all or any part of a uniform, including a shield, badge, number, or other identifying insignia or emblem.
(B) No person shall sell or purchase the uniform of any peace officer unless at the time of sale the purchaser presents to the seller both of the following:
(1) A current identification card that is issued by the law enforcement agency that employs the purchaser, that shows that the purchaser is employed by the law enforcement agency, and that bears a photograph of the purchaser;
(2) A letter on the letterhead of the law enforcement agency that employs the purchaser that authorizes the purchase of the uniform and that is dated and signed by the highest ranking officer of the law enforcement agency.
(C) Whoever violates division (B) of this section is guilty of the unlawful sale or purchase of a peace officer's uniform, a misdemeanor of the fourth degree.
