A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
| To urge the Congress of the United States to take
appropriate measures to denounce the actions of
the Russian Federation in banning meat imports
from Ohio and other areas of the United States.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO (THE SENATE CONCURRING):
WHEREAS, The Russian Federation recently banned pork and
other meat product imports from certain areas of the world,
including Ohio, citing the threat of the spread of swine influenza
as the reason for the ban; and |
WHEREAS, The World Health Organization has confirmed that
swine influenza does not spread through the consumption of
infected pork or other meat products; and |
WHEREAS, The Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture,
Robert Boggs, has reiterated that pork is safe to eat and that
swine influenza is not transmitted through meat consumption; and |
WHEREAS, Under international law, countries are only
permitted to block imports of meat and other products if there are
legitimate health and safety concerns based on proper scientific
evidence; now therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 128th General Assembly
of the State of Ohio, in adopting this resolution, urge the
Congress of the United States to take appropriate measures to
denounce the actions of the Russian Federation in banning meat
imports from Ohio and other areas of the United States; and be it
further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the
Speaker and Clerk of the United States House of Representatives,
the President Pro Tempore and Secretary of the United States
Senate, the members of the Ohio Congressional delegation, and the
news media of Ohio. |
