A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To designate the last week of September as "Native American Week."

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):

WHEREAS, Native Americans have made countless contributions towards shaping Ohio into the great state that it is today. For example, they have influenced the geography of the state from the burial mounds that dot the landscape to the names of towns throughout the state; and

WHEREAS, Native American tribes that enhanced the rich history and culture of our state include those that were indigenous to the region, including the Hopewell, Adena, Erie, Shawnee, and Kickapoo, and others that migrated to the region, including the Delaware, Miami, Ottawa, Seneca, and Wyandot; and

WHEREAS, These tribes and their people have made an indelible mark on the landscape, history, and culture of Ohio. Today, many Native Americans continue to call Ohio home, living, working, and raising their families here; and

WHEREAS, Native Americans living in Ohio can be justifiably proud of their rich heritage, spirituality, and traditions. It is important that they receive encouragement from the state's elected officials to continue teaching their culture to their children and sharing it with their fellow Ohioans; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly of the State of Ohio, designate the fourth week of September as "Native American Week," in conjunction with "Native American Indian Day" on the fourth Saturday of September, to honor the significant influence that Native Americans have had on Ohio and to encourage the teaching and sharing of their culture; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the news media of Ohio.
